Are you thinking about going to Alaska? Visiting Alaska should be on everyone’s “bucket list.” Not only is the scenery stunning but it is a great destination to see some iconic wild animals. On our last trip we did not visit the arctic so we did not see Caribou or polar bears. However, here is our “top 5” animals you can see on the coastline in southeastern Alaska.
1. Bears
We saw bears in multiple areas. The first location was at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, between Anchorage and Seward. We also saw bears in Icy Point Strait and in the Misty Fjords.
2. Bald Eagles
They are lots of opportunities to see bald eagles on your Alaskan adventure. We saw them up close at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and in Juneau at the top of the Mount Roberts Tramway. If you want to see them in the wild just look up while visiting Ketchikan.
3. Moose
We saw moose in the wild along the road in Anchorage and at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.
4. Salmon
The salmon had just started to run at the beginning of July, so our guide took us to off the beaten track so we could see them. However, if you go later in the year you will see them in Ketchikan along Creek Street.
5. Whales
Unfortunately, we did not get any photos of whales. However, we saw them along the Inside Passage as we sailed to Vancouver. There are also whale watching tours in Juneau.
Bonus domestic animal: Huskies
You can go on dog sled rides in multiple places. If you want to ride on the ice we recommend taking a helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier and take a dog sled ride on the glacier. We took a 15 minute sled ride on dry ground as part of our excursion from Skagway.
