We always find that the best way to learn about the culture and history of a place is to try the local food. Below are our recommended foods to try in Prague, Czech Republic. If you don’t want to explore on your own, just contact us to organize a food tour with a local guide.

1. Beer and Czech beer snacks

The perfect way to start the food tour is with local beer (Pilsner Urquell) and beer snacks. The snacks include Prague ham with horseradish cream, frankfurters, and pickled cheese. Pickled cheese is a camembert-style cheese marinated in oil and spices.

2. Pork Schnitzel with pickled vegetables

Pork Schnitzel is a traditional Czech food. It is pork, pounded thin, and then breaded and fried. We tried the pork schnitzel with pickled vegetables. You can’t really go wrong with fried meat; it was crispy and juicy.

3. Duck with red cabbage and bread dumplings

Another traditional Czech dish is roasted duck and it can be found at many local restaurants. I love duck so this was a perfect meal for me. The dumplings are like dense white bread which was great for soaking up the sauce. It was a great combination of salty, fatty, sweet, and acidic.

4. Burnt potato in ash with potato espuma

This dish is not a typical local dish that you would find in any local restaurant. However, it does contain traditional ingredients like carp. The potatoes cooked in ash with a creamy sauce was so delicious I could have licked the plate.

5. Pastries

We tried three traditional pastries:

  • laskonka – two coconut meringues with chocolate ganache
  • veneck – choux pastry with vanilla cream and sugar glaze
  • vetrnik – choux pastry with vanilla cream and caramel

They were all delicious and the perfect way to end our food tour.

Bonus: Chimney cake

Chimney Cakes (or Trdelník in Czech) are not a traditional local food but they were everywhere so we had to try one. It is dough cooked on a spit and then covered with cinnamon sugar.
